Modeling of hot-point drilling in ice

چکیده

Abstract Hot-point drills have been widely used for drilling boreholes in glaciers, ice caps and sheets. A hot-point drill melts through the thermal head at its bottom end. Penetration occurs a close-contact melting (CCM) process, which is melted, meltwater squeezed out by exerted force applied on head. During drilling, thin water film formed to separate from surrounding ice. For drill, rate of penetration (ROP) influenced several variables, such as shape, buoyancy corrected (BCF), power (or temperature) temperature. In this study, we developed model describe CCM where constant or temperature working surface assumed. The was using COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3a software evaluate effects different variables process. It discovered that effect shape cone angle conical ROP less significant, whereas increase BCF can continuously enhance ROP.

Hot Ice Computer

We experimentally demonstrate that supersaturated solution of sodium acetate, commonly called ‘hot ice’, is a massively-parallel unconventional computer. In the hot ice computer data are represented by a spatial configuration of crystallization induction sites and physical obstacles immersed in the experimental container. Computation is implemented by propagation and interaction of growing crys...

Antifreeze thermal ice core drilling: an effective approach to the acquisition of ice cores

Antifreeze thermal electric drills have a long history of ice drilling in temperate, subpolar and polar glaciers. Shallow, intermediate and deep ice cores have been obtained in Arctic, Antarctic and on high elevation glaciers. Many merits and drawbacks of antifreeze thermal technology have been discovered over the past 25 years. A modified version of the antifreeze thermal electric ice coring d...

Clean subglacial access: prospects for future deep hot-water drilling.

Accessing and sampling subglacial environments deep beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet presents several challenges to existing drilling technologies. With over half of the ice sheet believed to be resting on a wet bed, drilling down to this environment must conform to international agreements on environmental stewardship and protection, making clean hot-water drilling the most viable option. Such ...
